ABOUT ME

ARTIST / ILLUSTRATOR / LANGUAGE PRACTITIONER / JOURNALIST / BLOGGER

I work from home in the Tsitsikamma as an artist, art teacher, language practitioner, portraitist, cartoonist and book illustrator. I paint mostly in oils, and love sculpting. My trademark is variety.

See my art by clicking on my website link provided to the right on this page. Contact me for art classes and workshops at (083) 467 9388 and (042) 2811 006, and also for language services (see Skillpages ).

I have a BA degree in languages and a commercial art diploma and took classes in painting (water colours and acrylics) and commercial art, but invaluable constructive feedback from fellow-artists, copying of the works of the Old Masters, lots of portrait work, constant experimenting, and teaching art as a school subject constitute the bigger part of my growth and learning as an artist.
Presenting a painting workshop
on the West Coast.

I taught painting, sculpture and graphic design  for five years up to matric level at the Lientjie Blok Art Centre at Vredenburg on the West Coast.

With two students at their matric
exhib at Lientjie Blok Art Centre.
I paint subjects ranging from realistic landscapes, still lives, seascapes and portraits to dreamscapes and imaginary scenes.

Portraits are done in oils, pastels, pencil or charcoal, from life or from photographs; wildlife mostly from photographs in conjunction with fellow-artist and photographer Jackie During.

My portrait of the late Tienie
van der Linde, well-known
West Coast artist.

I also do commissioned copies of paintings of the Old Masters, such as Gustav Klimt, Thomas Gainsborough and John William Waterhouse.

My copy of a society portrait by Thomas
Gainsborough, in the house of a client in PE.
Sculpture includes ceramics, papier maché and works in relief comprising ceramics, found materials, plastic, hardware products and materials, and natural materials.

Some paintings are done from reference material, others just happen. The latter are never consciously conceived. Some works of art just announce themselves; they have a life of their own and even choose their own frames. This process makes art an adventure for me.
Some of my sculptures and one of the cats in my life -
